Employee Benefits

The City of Ventura offers regular status employees a generous benefits package. Benefits may differ by class and union bargaining unit.

Insurance
City employees may select from various health plans and two dental insurance plans. The City provides paid vision insurance for the employee and dependents and paid life insurance for the employee. Dependent health and dental coverage is available at a minimal cost to the employee. A city paid short-term and long-term disability program is also provided for some employee groups.

Retirement
All “regular status” employees become members of the Public Employee’s Retirement System (PERS). The City pays the employee’s contribution for all units except Fire Management and Police. No social security is withheld; however, employees pay 1.45% for Medicare coverage. ICMA Deferred Compensation Plan is available to regular employees.

Vacation
Accural rate varies by bargaining unit. Regular part-time employees earn at a rate proportionate to their regular work hours.

Holidays
Full-time employees earn twelve paid holidays per year. Regular part-time employees earn at a rate proportionate to their regular work hours.

Sick Leave

Optional Benefits Program
Each full-time employee shall be eligible to receive a monthly amount (dependent on job class and union bargaining unit) to apply towards a variety of optional benefits or to receive as salary. Regular part-time employees are eligible to receive optional benefit amounts proportionate to their regular work hours.

Other Benefits
An Educational Assistance Program is offered which shares the cost of university, college, and vocational programs related to an employee’s job or career. Reimbursement is 100% for tuition and books up to $1,500 per fiscal year. The City offers interest-free computer loans to full-time employees for purchase of approved computer equipment and software. Employees’ paychecks are automatically deposited in the employee’s checking account by electronic transfer on each payday.
