Fire Operations

Training

The fire department maintains a highly trained and skilled workforce. Firefighters must be trained and have knowledge in many different areas, from fire behavior, emergency medical skills and rescue techniques to general mechanical aptitude and personal relations. Training is accomplished at many different levels throughout the department.

New recruit Firefighter/ Paramedics are put through basic training in conjunction with the Ventura County Fire Department's regional Fire Training Academy. Personnel continue to receive regularly scheduled training at the company level, the battalion level and in multi-agency exercises. All aspects of the job are maintained in classroom and hands-on drills.

In addition to job related training members are encouraged to continue higher education learning and often attend management and command courses as well as technical seminars related to job responsibilities. Employees also receive regular training in fitness and wellness, employee relations, and grief counseling.
