Fire Operations

Specialized Duties

The fire department is required to be adept at many different disciplines due to the nature of the job. Many responsibilities go far beyond extinguishing fires and providing EMS. Areas of specialized collateral training are water rescue, technical rescue and HAZMAT.

The department employs a water rescue team and a cadre of rescue swimmers. Members undergo specialized training in swiftwater and surf rescue. Training also includes the use of inflatable rescue boats as well as shore based rescue techniques. A cooperative training environment exists with the California State Lifeguards, the Ventura Harbor Patrol and other local fire agencies.

Personnel assigned to Truck company 5 receive regular training in technical rescue situations. Personnel are instructed in confined space rescue, trench rescue, and rope rescue systems. The department undergoes regular training in urban search and rescue skills.

Fire station 6 is home to HAZMAT 6. The HAZMAT unit is staffed by the members of the engine company and it is part of the Ventura County Regional HAZMAT plan. Members assigned to Station 6 receive extensive HAZMAT training and are certified as Technicians or Specialists. HAZMAT 6 is one of four level A HAZMAT teams in the county and respond regionally to incidents involving hazardous materials.
