City to Hire Public Safety Personnel to Reduce Response Times

At the February 25th City Council meeting, staff will present a plan to add public safety personnel using funds from the Emergency Communications System Service Fee.

The recommendation before City Council includes a monthly fee amount of $1.49 on telephone lines in Ventura, while giving residents the option to select a per-call alternative equal to the annualized fee, in the amount of $17.88. Other revisions have been made to the fee structure, including a first-time exemption from the per-call fee, and the opportunity to enroll in the monthly fee after having chosen the per-call option and then dialing 9-1-1 from that line.

In January 2008 the City Council adopted an Emergency Communications Systems Service Fee Ordinance. The primary purpose of implementing the fee is to provide funding for the City's 9-1-1 communications center, allowing the funds currently used for the center to be redirected for:

The City's goal is to respond to Priority 1 Fire and Police calls in five minutes or less 90 percent of the time. This addition of six new Police Officers and three new Firefighter Paramedics is another incremental step in reducing response times. Responding to Priority 1 calls in less than five minutes is operative in saving lives during critical medical and police emergencies, such as cardiac events and domestic violence.

Downtown Water and Sewer Main Replacement March to June 2008

From March to early June, the City of Ventura will replace old water and sewer main pipelines along sections of Main, Oak and California Streets downtown. The project will replace approximately 4,800 feet of water pipeline and 2,700 feet of sewer pipeline.

The replacement project will improve the reliability and increase the capacity of the water and sewer system, reduce maintenance costs for the City, and ensure that water and sewer services continue to meet the current and future demands of our residents and business community.

The City is working closely with downtown merchants and residents to minimize delays and disruption during the project.
