Underneath a completed Elain Thompson painting are layers of bright, invigorating, and unpredictable colors. Beneath a landscape of earthy hues could be a field of cobalt blue and bright yellow, a process that contributes depth and intensity to an evolving composition.

Elain Thompson herself is not unlike the art she creates. From scraping and brushing a palette of oils, to the casual observations made of the world around her, there is always a lot going on underneath the surface. As an artist and as a person, there are many layers of Thompson, as profound as they are brilliant.

It is commonly said that to an artist, the world demands to be described. To Elain, it speaks of the fleeting nature of this world, a theme which is reflected in her choice of subject and reinforced by her treatment of color, light, and texture.

"The colors I see are not flat or simple," explain Elain, "they  often have unpredictable tinges of other colors, and may transform in the course of a day. I use oil on canvas because oil itself possesses those same kinds of qualitites."
