Westpark Community Center

Overview
To provide a variety of safe educational and affordable youth programs and services that develops self-esteem, leadership, character developemnt, sportsmanship and health and physical fitness.
The five core programs include:

Facility Hours:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday - 2:30pm - 6pm
Friday 2:30pm - 9 pm

Summer and Holiday Hours: Monday - Friday, Noon - 6pm.
Closed weekends and most holidays except for special events or organized
sports leagues.

Westpark Community Center serves youths ages 6-17 years old.

Education Development
The Education Development program area enables youths to become proficient in basic education values, to apply learning to everyday situations and to embrace technology to increase the probability of higher education. Education Development activities include:

Homework Hour: Youth receive homework assistance and
special tutoring
Monday - Friday 2:30 - 4:00 pm.


Reading Club: Youth learn the importance and enjoyment of reading.

Computer Education: Youth get hands on experience and instruction. Classes are offered at beginner and intermediate levels in Microsoft Office, Internet exploration and more. Youths are encouraged to use Westpark computers to complete homework assignments, reports and special projects.

The Arts
The Arts program area encourages youths to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through the knowledge and appreciation of visual and tactile arts & crafts and creative writing. An experienced adult instructor provides extensive knowledge in the following:

Ceramics
Clay and Pottery
Painting
Glazing
Fine Art
Art History
The Arts Program is conducted from 3:00 - 6:00, Monday through Thursday.

Sports, Fitness & Recreation
The Sports, Fitness and Recreation areas develop a healthy and positive use of leisure time, cultivating social and interpersonal skills.

Our sports activities include both clinic and leagues

Our sports clinics are designed to instruct youths ages 3 to 6 years. Our sports leagues are for youths ages 6 to 17 years.

Instruction and leagues are available in a variety of sports such as, but not limited to the following:

Character & Leadership Development
The Character and Leadership Development program empowers youths to support and influence their community center and their community; sustain meaningful relationships with others; develop a positive self-image; participate in the democratic process; and respect their own and others’ cultural identities. Character Traits Include: respect, responsibility, honesty, trustworthiness, fairness, citizenship, sportsmanship. Development programs activities include:

  • Leadership Training
  • Community Service Projects
  • Field Trips

Health & Life Skills
The Health and Life Skills program develops young peoples’ capacity to engage in positive behavior that nurtures their own well being; to set personal goals; and to develop the competencies to live successfully as self-sufficient adults. Program activities include:

  • Kids' Café
  • Cooking Classes
  • Educational Workshops

Police Activities League (P.A.L.)
Westpark Community Center is the hub for the Police Activities League run by the Ventura Police Department and the Community Services Department. PAL programs sponsor a variety of excursions, sports programs, social events and other programs open to all youths.

Volunteers
Westpark Community Center offers many opportunities for people wishing to volunteer their time and skills. Opportunities such as coaching a sports team, tutoring, gardening to name a few.
