Employment Opportunities

Join the City of Ventura's team of water safety professionals at the state-of-the-art aquatic center. This complex features a 50-meter competition pool, 25-meter recreation pool, a zero-depth entry water playground and two 20-foot waterslides. Enjoy your summer while working outside at this beautiful facility!

Applicants do not have to posses the required certifications to attend the physical assessment test dates listed below. If invited to attend the Lifeguard Recruitment Training program, the City of Ventura will provide the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course at no cost to the applicant. Those applying for Lifeguard II-Swim Instructor positions are required to obtain their Water Safety Instructor certification prior to employment independently.

LIFEGUARD II-SWIM INSTRUCTOR - $9.88 - $12.00/hour

Under general supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, plans, organizes and conducts swim lessons and performs lifeguard duties specific to program area. Requirements: Candidates must be at least 16 years of age, successfully complete the physical assessment test, interview process and the Lifeguard Recruitment Training program, and possess all of the following certificates: American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, CPR/FPR, Community First Aid and Lifeguard Training.

LIFEGUARD I - $8.23 - $10.00/hour

Under general supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, performs lifeguard duties specific to program area. Requirements: Candidates must be at least 16 years of age, successfully complete the physical assessment test, interview process and the Lifeguard Recruitment Training program, and possess all of the following certificates: American Red Cross CPR/FPR, Community First Aid and Lifeguard Training.

OFFICE AIDE - $8.23 - $10.00/hour

Under general supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, performs customer service, cashier duties, answers phones, light clerical and computer work, and record keeping specific to program area. Requirements: Candidates must be at least 16 years of age and successfully complete the interview process. No Physical Assessment test required.

PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT TEST

The Physical assessment test consists of a 400-yard swim in under 7 1/2 minutes and a 10-lb. brick tread for 1 minute. All skills are pass/fail. Applicants will only be required to attend one date. Please bring a picture ID verifying birth date. Physical Assessment testing will be held at the Ventura Aquatic Center on the following dates and times.

NO ALTERNATE TEST DATES WILL BE SCHEDULED:

  • Friday, March 14 from 4:30-6:30 pm
  • Saturday, March 29 from 8:30-10:30 am
  • Friday, April 4 from 10 am-12 pm & 2-4 pm
  • Saturday, April 5 from 8:30-10:30 am

INTERVIEWS

After passing the physical assessment test, all applicants must be prepared to complete and submit the following forms: City of Ventura Employment Application and Aquatics Section Supplemental Application. Please bring driver's license and/or social security number. Additional employment, education, and reference information may be required to fill out one or more of these forms. After completing all forms, applicants will be assigned an interview time that same day. Interviews will determine eligibility for the Summer Recruitment Training program.

DUE TO THE VOLUME OF APPLICANTS, INTERVIEWS MUST BE DONE AFTER PASSING THE PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT TEST AND COMPLETION OF THE APPLICATION ON THE SAME DAY.

SUMMER RECRUITMENT TRAINING

All applicants achieving a qualifying interview score will be invited to attend the Lifeguard Recruitment Training (LRT) program scheduled for two consecutive weekends: 4/18, 4/19, 4/20 & 4/25, 4/26, 4/27. Attendance at all dates is required in order to successfully complete the course. Invitations will be sent out the second week of April. Training will consist of American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, Community CPR and First Aid courses, as well as City of Ventura Aquatics Section policies and physical conditioning sessions. Current possession of these certificates does not replace the requirement of attending Lifeguard Recruitment Training. Those successfully completing (LRT) will be placed on a hiring list. All hiring of new staff will be done from the list.

ATTENDANCE AT ALL SESSIONS DURING LIFEGUARD RECRUITMENT TRAINING IS HIGHLY ADVISED. FAILURE TO ATTEND MAY RESULT IN THE DISQUALIFICATION OF THE APPLICANT.

STAFF PRE-SERVICE TRAINING

If hired, you must attend mandatory pre-service training. Summer 2008 pre-service training will be held:

  • Friday, May 30 from 5-9 pm
  • Saturday, May 31 from 8 am-4pm
  • Sunday, June 1 from 8 am-4 pm
  • Friday, June 6 from 5-9 pm
  • Saturday, June 7 from 8 am-12 pm
  • Sunday, June 8 from 8 am-12 pm

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCEDURE

Applicants must complete the online application and supplemental questionnaire at www.cityofventura.jobs, and bring a copy of the completed material to the physical assessment test as interviews will be held the same day.

All completed application materials will be reviewed. A limited number of the most appropriately qualified candidates will be selected for further consideration based on the application and supplemental questionnaire (if required) and other written information submitted. Please complete your materials in detail so that the breadth and depth of your applicable training, experience, and education for the position may be evaluated. Candidates who are selected for further consideration will be contacted directly by the Community Services Department. A TB test is required prior to the start of employment.

Temporary extra-help positions are exempt from the Personnel Merit System. Temporary positions are dependent upon funding and other matters as determined by the City. Temporary employees may be terminated at any time without advance notice and have no right of appeal. Individuals appointed to temporary positions may work no more than a total of 1,000 hours in a fiscal year, and are not eligible for paid vacation, sick leave, holiday or other benefits provided to employees in regular city positions.
