Sportsmanship

Christine Olivia Simonson
Grade 5 - Mound Elementary School
What word has a realm far beyond its root? For me, that is sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is fair play, respect for opponents and gracious behavior in winning or losing and that includes events and life both on and off the sports field. When these positive components of sportsmanship are present all the participants glow.
Good sportsmanship reaches far beyond grassy fields and wooden courts, and into everyday moments in the swimming pool of life. Day to day, a good sport should be honest, respectful, sharing, caring, generous and willing to congratulate both friends and nemeses for their victories, whether they are athletic, physical, or personal, or just plain lucky.
In the heart of a competition a good sport is positive and willing to give credit to an opponent’s skill. Additionally, a good sport cares about the feelings of all, and needs to be encouraging to the particular players who are still developing their skill for the sport. In sportsmanship, there is no room for excluding others, at school, at the bus stop, or really anywhere at any place at anytime. Truly, a good sport knows the best secret of all… complementing the opponents and making them to feel better about themselves has a boomerang affect. In fact, the giver of compliments receives far more than he or she gave.
Moreover, the traits of sportsmanship learned early in life should set patterns to keep an individual shine in between each facet of his or her adult life. When one learns at an early age to be fair, to look at both sides of the ball, to be kind, gracious, and supportive, that person is ready to walk the path of light lit with an inner sparkle and strength to avoid stumbling over the rocky moments in life.
Respect

Kyle Cook
Grade 5 - Junipero Serra Elementary
The dictionary defines the word respect as “esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or ability”.
To me respect means to be nice or kind to one or another. If you respect others they will respect you. One way that you can respect people is to treat them the best that you can. Treat them the way that you want to be treated. Another way that you can show respect to others is to help them if they have trouble with something. This is what I think that respect is.
I show respect by taking care of things and helping others. I also show respect by cleaning my room and doing my chores. There are many ways I show respect. I think the best way I show respect is by being fare in all the games I play; I respect others by not cheating. This is how I show respect to other people.
I have earned respect by being kind and nice to other people. I have earned the respect of my parents by doing what I say I will do and by coming home on time. They show me that they respect me by letting me go places and play with my friends when there is no adult. This is how people show me respect.
Respect is a powerful thing. You get the power of respect by earning it so you can get more privileges, but if you don’t respect other people you will get less privileges so that means you don’t have as much of respect’s power.
I hope people use respect the way I have explained it in my essay today. Thank you for listening to my essay on respect today.
Honesty

Holly Guzman
Grade 5 - Elmhurst Elementary
Honesty = Honorable; truthful; trustworthy; not lying, cheating, stealing, or taking advantage.
I looked up honesty in the dictionary because people have different opinions of what honesty is. Honesty is a very important character trait to have because it allows people to be trusted, and also allows one's confidence to grow stronger. This, however, is what honesty means to me.
I realize that there are big influences in a kid's life. The first is authority, such as parents, guardians, and teachers. Parents are seen to be the most important, because parents have been with us our whole lives. We build trust between us and our parents. If parents are not honest, and because they are role models, we grow up like them. Teachers are important roll models too, and kids are with teachers most of the day. If students see teachers being dishonest, they think it is okay to do the same.
Honesty also has another point in my opinion…it involves choice. You can go down the honest road, even if it is hard to be a loner sometimes. Or you can go join the "in crowd" and do what everyone else is doing. That brings you into peer pressure (between your friends). But it is your choice-no one else can choose for you.
Good or Bad, Honest or Dishonest.
No one said being honest would be easy, but let's try going down the honest road, because EVERYONE has that same choice…what will yours be?
