Mayors for a Moment, 2006

Kindness

Mayor for a Moment, Cassidy Davis

Cassidy Davis
Grade 5 - Blanche Reynolds School

Kindness is a very important characteristic that everyone should have.

Kindness is cheering someone up when they are down, being kind to a new kid in school or a neighbor; visiting a sick friend or relative, or sending them a get-well card. Kindness is giving to Good Will, or giving something back that's not yours.

Kindness can also give you a good feeling inside by making others feel very important and special or happy.

I feel like everyone has kindness even if it's way deep down inside of them, and they should always use it.

It is always good to be kind because it can lead to some really great things!

Cooperation

Mayor for a Moment, Mario Estrada

Mario Estrada
Grade 5 - E.P. Foster Elementary

There are so many ways to show cooperation. In this essay I am writing ideas that show what cooperation means to me.

The first way to show cooperation is by helping others. One way to help people is helping your mom make food and setting up the table. Another way to help others is to help people cross the street, and you can donate stuff to help people that don't have a home. Also, putting groceries in other people's cars is also a way to show cooperation to other people. Another way to show cooperation with just words is by saying, thank you, please, and I'm sorry.

The second way to show people cooperation is by doing teamwork with others. One way to do teamwork is if you are on a football, soccer, baseball or basketball team, you pass the ball to other players. For example, soccer you pass the soccer ball to make a goal. Another game that you use teamwork is in baseball you have to make an out. The third game is football. The quarterback has to pass the football to a receiver to make a touchdown. Last, in basketball you have to pass the basketball to a teammate to score points. For me, that is what teamwork means to me.

That is the amount of ideas that show me and maybe other people what cooperation means to other people and me.

Courtesy

Courtesy is all about being nice, generous, and gracious.

When you are courteous to other people, they will be courteous to you.

A good way to be courteous is to give people positive comments about themselves. That will make them feel good.

It is good to be courteous because it makes you feel great too! Here is an example. If I was to hear someone say to me, "you look good today, Sophia" and I just walked away, I would not be demonstrating courteous behavior. I would not want to be ignored, so I don't ignore others. Instead, I should say, "thank you!"

When someone opens a door for you at a restaurant, you say "thank you." Then the next time you have a chance, open the door for someone else!

Other situations are, to say, "excuse me" when you want to pass someone; helping a person up if they fall; and, saying "bless you" when you hear someone sneeze.

Courtesy is a great quality to have, so please remember to always be courteous to others!

Responsibility

Mayor for a Moment, Mallory McPherson-Wehan

Grade 5 - Loma Vista Elementary

You are born without a clue what responsibility is. Look at you now. You have so many more responsibilities, and the more responsibility you do right, the more the trust and privileges you have.

Your family will trust you more and more as you keep doing responsible things such as walking the dog, feeding your pet, doing chores, finishing due work, studying, getting to school on time, even doing right things to help your health. People now trust you if you watch their dog while they're gone or watering their plants, and taking out the trash.

A trust comes in stages as you grow up, but can lose it in seconds just by lying. You may not want to do something but that doesn't give you the right to lie or even not do it. People can't trust you any more if you lie about something serious. Even so called "little white lies" can steal trust from your grasp. It may take weeks to repay their trust or months or even years, but the more privileges you do the more people give you trust.

Responsibility is like money. You give them your word to do something or finish something and if you don't it's like money down the drain.

Responsibility is usually a priority and means something to friends and family and can bounce right back to you.

The Importance of
Self-Control
Sage Schneiderbauer
5th grade Student - Lincoln School

Self-control is very important for many reasons. In my opinion the three most important reasons are being financially responsible, getting along with other people and being healthy. You may wonder how self-control applies to these aspects of life. I think the easiest way to explain how they apply is using examples from my life.

Self-control is important when it comes to being financially responsible. For me this means that when I get money at my birthday I have to save some of it instead of spending it all. If I spent all my money on purses, hats and shoes like I want to I would not put any in my savings. This self-control helps me be prepared by having money saved for when I need it for something important. It is responsible to save money and be prepared. If people in charge of our city or state spend all the money on whatever they want that would be irresponsible and the money wouldn’t be available for what we need like the fire department or community services. I wish everyone had more self-control when it comes to being financially responsible.

Self-control is also important when it comes to everyone getting along. For me this means when I want to talk in class I raise my hand, wait until I’m called on and then say what I want. We all have to respect one another and wait our turn or the classroom would turn into a zoo! The same is true when our parents are driving or waiting in line at a store. It would not be a very good world without self-control because everyone would do whatever they felt like, whenever they felt like it. I’m glad people have self-control.

Finally self-control is important when it comes to being healthy. If I eat too much junk food I do not feel healthy and do not have enough energy. We have to have self-control when it comes to how much or what we eat and drink. Too much of the wrong stuff is bad for our body and mind. We also have to exercise and get fresh air to stay healthy. Sometimes this means we have to have enough self-control to get up and turn off the TV! I wish this kind of self-control was easier.

I have explained why I think being financially responsible, getting along with other people and being healthy are the three most important reasons to have self-control. There are so many other examples and reasons that self-control is important. Can you think of a reason why self-control is important to you and to your community?

Punctuality
Stephanie Corrales
5th Grade Student - Sheridan Way School
April 2006

Have you ever been late? Always have to do something else and can never be punctual? Well here are some ideas that might help you.

Being a punctual person is important because you might not want to be late for a very important meeting or job interview. You might even get fired because you aren’t on time. Many people aren’t punctual and some people are. It is very important to be punctual so that you can relax and you don’t have to be in a bad mood every single day because you’re always running behind schedule. It isn’t really a bad thing, its just important.

Many people have many different ways to be on time and some people don’t have any. Do you have any? I do. Here are some of the ways that might help you be punctual. First, you can write some little reminders on your calendar saying the time, the place, and the date. Another way is to set your alarm a little bit earlier than the time you’re supposed to be at that place. You can also get everything you need prepared ahead of time. Those are some of my tips to help you be a punctual person.

Life can be hard so why not make it a little easier for you? Being a punctual person can help you in life in many different ways. One thing that you can do by being a punctual person is that you can relax more and do many different things because you’re not worried about the time. Another thing that it can help you with is that you can spend more time with your family. The important thing is that it can help you pay the bills and the rent and to put food on the table for your family. Being punctual can help a lot of people and it can help you too.

So you can be punctual if you know why it is important, how to be a punctual person, and how it can help you in life. Remember, you too can be a punctual person.

Sportsmanship
Eddi Ventura
5th Grader - Montalvo School
March 2006

Sportsmanship is when you respect the opponents and when you give them good compliments and not bad compliments. Sportsmanship is also when you play fair without caring if you lose or win. Sportsmanship looks like one person not acting mad because he lost the game and telling the other opponents, “Good game.” Sportsmanship looks like when you are happy with what the judges give you.

It is important to display sportsmanship when you are in a game. Another time you should display sportsmanship is if you are in a contest and the judges give you bad scores. Don’t get mad. Be glad of your score. Sportsmanship can help you in life because you will have lots of friends. It can also help you in life because if you do sportsmanship, people can be able to trust you.

Sportsmanship is the best thing to do if you are in a contest. Sportsmanship is the best thing because it will probably prevent fights.

Respect
Chantal Robles
5th Grader – Sunset School
February 2006

Respect is an important character trait that everyone should show at all times. You show respect at home, school, stores, and every other place that you go to.

At home you show respect by not talking back, having good manners, listening to your parents, sisters, and brothers when they are talking to you, and by helping them on what they need help with.

School is another place where you should always use respect. You respect your teachers, classmates, principal, yard duty, and all the adults that help you in school. You respect them by not talking back, listening to directions, following directions, not making fun of people, and not talking when you’re not allowed to.

Finally, stores are the other place that you have to show respect at because most of the people there don’t know you and people that are around you that you don’t know will think bad about you. You also have to not make fun of people, and have very good behavior.

Respect is a character trait everyone should have and always show.
