Cooperation

Yanet ("Janet") Moreno
Will Rogers Elementary School
November 2005

“Pass the ball” said the player. That is what cooperation means. Cooperation means teamwork, helping others and working together. I always want to be cooperative, like my friends and family are to me.

First, cooperation means teamwork. Teamwork means playing well together. All sports and games require cooperation and great teamwork. Teams don’t win games without cooperation. There is no “I” in team.

Second, cooperation means helping others. Helping others means helping people do things better. I want to help others by being nice and cooperative. I also help people by respecting them. I even help other students with their homework.

Third, cooperation means working together. Working together means teaching people new things and helping. For example, I work together with my friends and family. I like to work together with my friends when we partner up. I like to work together with people that need help.

In conclusion, these are the reasons that mean cooperation. Teamwork, helping others and working together.

Responsibility

Christopher Alvarez
Poinsettia Elementary School
September 2005

I am a 10 year boy going to Poinsettia Elementary School. I was born on August 5, 1995 in San Francisco. I have an older brother and a younger sister and also have a mom and a dad. Responsibility is an important thing in our family.

When I was young, my mom told me to pick up my toys after I was done playing with them. My dad would tell me to turn off the t.v. when I was done watching it. Another big responsibility was flushing the toilet after I used it and washing my hands. This example is probably the biggest one for my mom, I had to take off my shoes when they were muddy before going back into the house.

Time has changed and so has responsibility. Now I have more things I have to be responsible for. For example, taking out the trash, giving my dog food and fresh water to drink. Some of the other examples are helping to clear the dinner table, cleaning my desk every so often, and also picking up after my dog’s messes.

When I grow up my responsibilities are going to be different. I will be a responsible driver, pay my own taxes, and drive myself to work. I have to be responsible for finishing college or maybe maintaining a family someday. The biggest ones are obeying the law, buying and cooking my own meals, and buying a house.

Responsibility changes over time, because you become older and more mature. You have to deal with more serious stuff in life. For example, you become responsible for many people if you become a doctor. A doctor has to help his patients even when they’re sick or ill, not just for check ups. I will become a responsible person when I grow up.

Thank you.

Self Control
Mike Pare
Pierpont Elementary School
May 2005

Having self-control is like being a good jet pilot. A pilot that has control over his plane can do cool tricks like barrel rolls, loop-de-loops, and corkscrews. He can do all these tricks as long as he has control over his plane. The pilot who does not have control over his plane is a danger to himself and other people. He will not have fun flying and he will probably crash. That is not fun at all.

I like to think of the plane as my life. If I have control of my life, I can do whatever I want to so. If I don’t have control over my life, random things will start happening to me like, losing my temper and getting in fights, or giving into peer-pressure. I don’t want to go where the winds blow me. I want to go where I want to go.

I think that there are three parts to life: Your body, your mind, and your spirit. Your body can trick you with addiction. For example, your body craves sugar and salt even though it is not good for you. Therefore, it is important to eat healthy food for proper nutrition. Your mind can trick you with things like fear or peer-pressure. For example, if you are hanging out with your friends after school, one of them might pull out a pack of cigarettes and offer you one of them. Some of your friends might start urging you to try smoking. Your mind might make you think that there is nothing wrong and you might think that if you don’t try you won’t be cool.

If you use self-control, you will be successful in life. You will get a good job, have a lot of friends, have a great family, and be happy. Your spirit will always guide you and help you make the right decisions and be in control of yourself.

Punctuality

Alexa Constantine
5th Grader at Mound Elementary School
April 2005

I believe that punctuality holds a very important place in life. What is punctuality? Punctuality is defined as being on time, or to be prompt. People count on you to be where you need to be on time. Being punctual is like a promise. If you say you will do something on time, people will hope you will keep your promise and be punctual. An example of punctuality is turning your homework in on time. You need to finish your work on time and not put things off until the next day because if you don’t, people will not be able to count on you to do what you said you would do. Punctuality is very important in my life. For example, I’m in a play, and I have to be at the practices right at the time the directors say I have to be there. Just a few days ago, the directors of the play talked about how people are late to the practices all the time. They said that it was disrespectful to others in the play because all of us have to wait until everyone is at the practice in order to start. Punctuality really shows how much you care about what you’re doing. If a person is always late to a practice for a play, it shows that that person doesn’t have a great interest in the play. If you are always there on time, not only does it show that you have great interest in the play, it shows that you respect others’ time as well. There are many examples of punctuality such as being to school or work on time, being on time to a doctor’s appointment, etc. All in all, I think the smooth running of most things in life depend upon the punctuality of people. Being punctual shows self-respect as well as respect for others.

Respect

Anna Guasco
Elmhurst Elementary School
February 2005

To me, respect isn’t something you should learn and forte about. Respect is what we should all use. Here are some examples.

If you and a friend are having different opinions, what should you do? That’s where respect comes in. If you honor the other person’s opinion, that’s respect.

Let’s say you’re bursting with excitement, because you just got two tickets to a concert and your best friend can come! When you find your friend he/she’s talking to someone else. Should you interrupt, or wait? If you decide to wait, that’s respecting.

What if your parents announce a new rule that you don’t agree with? You’re debating whether to try to rid of the rule or not. If you choose not to because of their position of authority over you, that’s respect.

Pretend you’re really mad at someone. You want to go yell at them. But then you stop and think and think about it. Would you want to be yelled at just for having your own opinions? Probably not. If you decide to treat the person the way you would want to be treated yourself, that’s respecting.

Imagine you’re on a really crowded bus, but you’ve managed to find a seat. There are no seats left, when an elderly woman walks in. Should you give up your seat to her? If you do, that’s respecting.

As you can see, there are many different kinds of respect. I only talked about a few! Respect should come naturally to each and every human being. That is what respect means to me.

Honesty

Christine E. Wood
Blanche Reynolds Elementary School
January 2005

When people are honest to me, it makes me feel like I can trust that person. When they are not honest, I can’t trust them to keep a secret. I really like to trust people to be honest. I hate having friends or family not being honest to me. It’s really important to be honest to people because if you’re not honest to them, they won’t be honest to you.

A time when I wasn’t honest is when I didn’t’ turn in my homework, and I would tell my mom I did. My mom might have been proud, but I know I wasn’t.

It was about a week with conferences and I didn’t know what to do. My teacher would show my mom the missing work I didn’t do. I felt really bad inside so I went to my mom and I told her I was missing homework. My mom was mad, not just for the homework, but because I lied. When I told my mom about it I did feel bad, but I wasn’t guilty anymore. I’m glad I was honest because I know it was the right thing to do.
